Pickling 101

Making pickles is SO easy! You make a brine, prepare whatever it is you are going to pickle, put it in a jar and wait a couple of days! I didn’t learn to pickle until quite recently, and I was so surprised by its simplicity! Pickling is the process of preserving food by soaking it in an acidic solution. The liquid inhibits bacteria. If you want your pickles to last for a long period of time, you will need to properly can them. For the purposes of this article, we are just putting the lid on the mason jar and popping it in the fridge, and your pickles will last for about a month.

There are lots of fun variations for seasoning your pickled “whatever”, but the basic gist is quick and easy.

Step 1: Make your brine (for 3 quart sized jars)
