So many people are interested in sustainable living and growing their own food for their families, but without even a small backyard or patio, where do you start? If you have a windowsill, or even an LED grow light, you can sprout seeds!
In our hometown, organic sprouts are about $6 for a very small container. I buy an 8oz bag of organic broccoli sprouting seeds for $18 and I use about 10oz of seeds to grow a full container of sprouts. I can do that 22 times. So its about $.81 for a round of sprouts that is bigger than the container I would get at the store! Yes, please!
Sprouting is easy!
Step 1: Soak the seeds overnight, or for about 12 hours.
Step 2: Rinse the seeds 1-2x per day and leave them covered on your counter or windowsill until the little yellow leaves appear. This can be as quickly as 48 hours, or as long as a week.
Step 3: Once you have little yellow leaves/sprouts you can uncover, make sure your sprouts are spread evenly if you are using a strainer like I do, and leave them in the sun to grow. Continue rinsing 1-2x per day.
Step 4: When you think they are ready, you can start eating them!
We enjoy sprouts on salads, with our eggs as a garnish, on avocado toast, all by themselves as a little snack! My kids enjoy the slight spiciness of the broccoli sprouts or radish sprouts, and I like the buttery flavor of sunflower sprouts!
I usually have a bag of organic broccoli, green pea, and sunflower seed sprouts on hand, and I have really enjoyed how these white ceramic sprouting containers look on my counter, although you can find bigger ones if you would like to sprout a larger quantity at a time!
