Queen of the Homestead

The cow is the queen because no one can beat her for personality, milk volume, or the versatility of her milk. A cow can support a family all by herself! She contributes a yearly calf. She turns grass into milk that can become butter, cheese, ice cream, sour cream, yogurt, and so much more! Her manure not only improves her pasture, but can become fertilizer for fruit trees, berry bushes, and a vegetable garden!

Princess Buttercup is our mini jersey dairy cow, and my very good friend. She is actually only half mini, as her mom was a standard size jersey. Buttercup is a really nice mid-size cow, and the most amazing mom!

Buttercup raises her calf and we milk once a day! She makes plenty of milk for her baby and for our family! Milking is something I enjoy immensely. It doesn’t seem to matter what my mood is going in, after that peaceful time with Buttercup, I am calm and still. Cows seem to hold an innate stillness, and whether Buttercup and I are snuggling or I’m milking, she seems to still my racing thoughts and drain away anxiety. For so many reasons, cows are awesome! Especially mine.
